Overview

Value chain studies are one of NIRAM Ltd's flagship services. We conduct end-to-end analysis of agricultural and agribusiness value chains to identify inefficiencies, map actor relationships, and uncover opportunities for systemic improvement.

Why Value Chain Studies Matter

Agricultural value chains in Rwanda — and across sub-Saharan Africa — are often fragmented, characterized by high post-harvest losses, information asymmetries, and weak market linkages. Our studies provide the evidence base needed to design targeted interventions that create shared value for all actors.

Study Components

  • Actor mapping and relationship analysis
  • Cost and margin analysis at each value chain node
  • Post-harvest loss quantification and root cause analysis
  • Gender and youth disaggregated analysis
  • Technology and infrastructure gap assessment
  • Policy and regulatory environment review
  • Competitive benchmarking against regional markets

Selected Value Chains

We have conducted in-depth value chain studies for maize, rice, beans, Irish potato, tomato, banana, avocado, dairy, honey, and aquaculture, among others. Each study is tailored to the specific context and intended use of the findings.

Understanding the full value chain — from seed to fork — is the only way to create interventions that truly move the needle for farmers and consumers alike.

Recommendations & Follow-Up

Every value chain study culminates in a practical recommendations report with prioritized interventions, estimated costs, and implementation timelines. We also offer facilitated stakeholder workshops to validate findings and build consensus around action plans.
